This antibody recognises the amino-terminal fragment of pro-brain natriuretic peptide (amino acids 13-20), also known as NT-proBNP, a cleavage product during the proteolytic activation of BNP. NT-proBNP is a secreted protein which is a member of the natriuretic peptide family, which is predominantly secreted from the cardiac ventricles in response to volume and pressure overload. NT-proBNP is more stable than BNP in serum, and has become a useful biomarker of heart failure.
