Specificity
This antibody recognises human PAI-1, also known as plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 or SERPINE1. PAI-1 is a ~45 kDa serine protease inhibitor and member of the serpin family, which acts as the primary inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), and hence fibrinolysis.Mutations of the SERPINE1 gene are associated with Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 deficiency (PAI-1D), a condition characterized by episodes of severe hemorrhage. Heterozygous carriers of the mutation do not display the same phenotype, instead demonstrate longer teleomere length, lower incidence of diabetes and increased longevity. Increased levels of PAI-1 are associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and an increased occurrence of thrombosis in obesity, and can be induced by obesity related factors including insulin, glucose and very-low-density lipoprotein.
