This antibody recognises caspase-3 also known as cysteine protease CPP32. Caspase-3, as the name implies, is a member of the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) protein family.Caspase-3 is an effector caspase that is activated by both the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways. Caspase-3 is cleaved from an inactive 32 kDa zymogen/pro-enzyme into p17 and p12 subunits by the activated initiator caspases 9 and 8 in apoptotic cells. These subunits dimerize to form the active caspase 3 protein that cleaves and activates caspase-6 and 2. Through the activation/cleavage of downstream caspases, caspase-3 plays an important role in mediating apoptosis signaling.
